Oral Care Tips for Dementia Caregivers

Writer: Southern Comfort Senior LivingSouthern Comfort Senior Living

Providing oral care to a loved one with dementia can be challenging and stressful, but it is important that you maintain proper oral hygiene because it is a crucial factor that influences their overall health and well-being.

Someone with dementia might not be able to communicate that they are experiencing dental issues such as toothache or gum problems, as such, it is important that the caregiver is able to provide daily dental care as well as schedule regular dental appointments as well as take note of any changes in behavior when providing oral care.

Here are some tips to help make daily dental care easier and more effective:

  1. Be patient and understanding: Acknowledge that the patient may be resistant to oral care and take the time to explain the importance of oral hygiene.

  2. Make it a pleasant experience: Use soothing language and warm, gentle touch.

  3. Use distraction techniques: Try engaging the patient in conversation and provide them with something to hold or chew on while you clean their teeth.

  4. Involve family members: Ask family or caregivers to help by providing support and encouragement.

  5. Establish a routine: Try to create a regular oral care routine that is easy to remember and follow.

  6. Use the right products: Look for products that are designed specifically for dementia patients, such as toothpaste without fluoride and soft toothbrushes.

  7. Reward positive behaviors: Praise the patient when they cooperate and reward them with a small treat or activity afterward.

These tips have been helpful for us and our residents and hopefully they are helpful for you and your loved one. If you have any questions or concerns, consult a dental professional.
